For many generations, iboga has played an important role for practitioners of the Bwiti religion in Central Africa. The Bwiti initiation rite to attain spiritual maturity recommends ingesting a very strong dose of iboga – by taking the plant an intense mind- and spirit-altering experience is induced. Smaller doses are taken during weekly ceremonies of collective religious fervor, moments of intense love and mutual understanding fueled by dancing and drumming late into the night.
